Meet the Crew

Matthew & Sonja Johnson

Matthew is living out his childhood dream of working on his family’s farm and ranch. As a result of Matt’s careful tending, the operation has diversified its practices and focus. Respectful of the traditions of the farm, Matt has taken steps to cultivate growth and change, always believing in ” the promise of better days through better ways.” Encouraged by his family to attend college, Matthew completed one semester at Montana State to satisfy them, and returned to home soil as soon as possible. He does, however, continue to educate himself as he is a perpetual learner, always studying and seeking opportunities for growth in a way that is mindful and deliberate. Matt was born a farmer- so he farms, and it’s really that simple.

Sonja was integrated into the farming lifestyle in 1994. She has since became a proficient farmhand, taking on most tasks, excluding mechanic. Sonja is also an artist, painting “prairie-scapes” on old grain-cleaning screens. Currently, she is enrolled at Miles Community College in the graphic design certification program.

Brett Johnson

Raised on the family ranch, Brett spent a couple years working in the concrete business before enrolling in the Diesel Mechanic program at MSU-Northern. He is currently working full time on the the ranch, and is the 5th generation to care for the cattle, land and machinery, executing all practices required for sustainability.

Darwin Johnson

Darwin retired in 2008, but has continued to be helpful as a skilled equipment operator, and trucker. His positive attitude and easy-going way is a welcome addition to the work day when problems arise. He brings an understanding of the landscape and history that only an individual who has spent their life here can provide.

Past and Present Crew Members

Pictured here are only some of the workers who have helped in the success of our ranch.

We are thankful to the former employees who have lent a hand a Johnson Ranch.
