What We Raise

Johnson Ranch raises mainly black Angus, purchasing angus bulls from local breeders. We will also cross the Angus with another breed for docility and mothering qualities, often Hereford, which gives us the black “baldy” calves.

Chickens were added to the ranch in recent years, after moving the original chicken coop from the homestead place in 2016. We purchase chicks through the mail and raise them for egg production.

Husbandry Practices

Johnson Ranch is focused on raising cow-calf pairs in a mindful way, concentrating on low-stress handling and proper feed production.

Caring for calves during calving and branding means making sure the young calves are healthy and monitored.

Optimal timing during haying season is essential to quality nutrition in feed production. We utilize feed tubs to supplement pasture grazing in the summer months to ensure a healthy breeding season.

Heifers (new mother cows) are fed a ration of grains, pellets, and hay in a corral setting. We try to be near the animals to reduce anxiety when they are near humans. This will prove helpful if a heifer experiences trouble calving and requires assistance.

At weaning time we like the nose flaps (pictured above top right) because they allow the calf to stay close to the mother, yet restrict the calf from sucking, readying it to be away from the mother gently.
